The Ministry of Health is intensifying mass awareness messages on hygiene practices as cases of Cholera rise to 199. The death toll remains at 4, but there are fears that the outbreak may spread to more districts, during this rainy season. As of last week, the number of those infected by Cholera was at 122 but has risen to 199, in the past two days, with Karonga and Nkhatabay being the worst hit. 16 of the country’s 28 districts have been put on high alert of Cholera outbreak. Authorities in that country have put in place various preventive measures to control the outbreak, such as limiting hours of church and social activities, where people gather and share food, as well as banning street vending of food stuffs. Cholera continues to devastate Chikwawa district with about five students from Chikwawa Secondary School currently being admitted to district hospital for possible-cholera infection. The district has been subjected to continued Cholera outbreaks over the years due to poor hygiene standards and communities' negligence to practice good sanitation behaviors. In August nine people were admitted to Chikwawa district hospital following a Cholera outbreak barely four months after another outbreak hit the district’s two villages in the area of Paramount Chief Lundu. Over 38 people were affected during the last outbreak.
