Five Malawian designers over the weekend had an opportunity to showcase their work at the Eco Fashion Week (EFW) in Canada on Saturday. The five—Mphatso Chisale, Bruce Matewere, Faida Banda, Nomonde Sambakunsi and Viviette Designs—were part of scores of designers from across the globe showcasing at the EFWwhich has been organised by the African Fashion and Arts Movement (Afam) which is passionate about African fashion and Arts movement. The five were identified by Patti DeSante, an expat who has been in and out of Malawi for the past three years. Miss Malawi first princess Nthanda Manduwi has earned a slot to represent Malawi at the World Miss University beauty pageant in Cambodia. Manduwi, 22, is representing Malawi as an undergraduate of the University of Malawi, Chancellor College where she pursued a bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Economics and Demography. In an interview, the Miss Chancellor College 2013 said she landed in Cambodia on Monday for the contest which will take place on December 20 2017. She said: “It is an absolute honour to represent Malawi at an international pageant. Malawi hasn’t been represented at such an event. The Miss Malawi beauty pageant contest stepped up its focus when it held regional finals on Saturday. This is the second stage in the search for the next beauty queen after the recent countrywide auditions. The search, or say the regional finals, will begin in Mzuzu and then move to Blantyre next weekend. Miss Malawi event spokesperson Africano Phiri said this is an advanced stage of the contest as they seek to select the crème de la crème for the national finals in April next year. “We are looking at character of the person, beauty and ability to express oneself. We are not looking at one aspect, but a combination of these three,” he says.
